The fundamental difference between a normally reinforced and post-tensioned floor is the method by which the concrete’s low tensile strength is enhanced or increased. In normally reinforced concrete, reinforcement in a form of steel bars generally at spacings of 150mm to 200mm is placed in areas where tensile stresses develop under load. The reinforcement is able to carry the tension loads and, by limiting the stress in this reinforcement, the cracking of the concrete is kept within acceptable limits. In post-tensioned concrete, more efficient use is made of the concrete and steel. The compressive stress is introduced into areas where tensile stresses develop under load, which resists or balances these tensile stresses. This also has the benefit of less cracking.
