Since 2010, there has been a growing development of different-use buildings in the CB1 area, Cambridge. Interspan has brought our post-tensioning expertise to the construction of the latest 8 storey office space at 30 Station Road. Designed by architect TP Bennett, this new space is capable of housing up to 800 employees.
Boasting a 2-minute walk from Cambridge train station, the new, mixed-use development from Brookgate has seen investment from megacompanies Amazon and Samsung. At the nearby offices of 21 Station Road, Microsoft Research Lab operates and is committed to pushing the boundaries of computing technology. Part of the varied developments is the residential 50/60 Station Road, where – unsurprisingly – this lucrative area has enabled this building to be fully let.
Design Features of 30 Station Road
Comprising of a basement level with electric car charging points, a ground floor, and 6 upper floors, the 8,300m2 of office space has sought to employ new technology, which will help to reduce water usage by up to 40%. Another environmental feature is nesting boxes placed on the roof for the provision of safe habitats for local wildlife, 30 Station Road looks to be part of a more sustainable and socially considerate environment.
Building of 30 Station Road
For 30 Station Road to be constructed, the former Daedalus House (at this location) had to be demolished. Structural engineers Mott MacDonald specified for the design and installation of bonded post-tensioned concrete floors.
Post-tension floorplates were adopted in place of reinforced concrete, with a saving in concrete volume of over 600m3 thanks to a 75mm slab thickness reduction. The 50-year life slabs ranged between 325mm to 380mm thickness and up to 12.9m in length.
The total volume of concrete used on the project was kept to 2,900 m3 with an area of 8,300m2.
A perimeter downstand/upstand beam 750mm wide by 500mm deep was included in the design, along with a fire safety rating of 90 minutes.
